| The Flute Concerto was composed in 1973 for Robert Aitken and it was awarded the Composition Prize of the Nordic Councill in 1976. It is one movement, but in three parts. "In this there is the usual dramatic construction, except that it starts at the zenith," says Atli just as if such construction were quite usual. The instructions of the composer to the player are also unusual. First there are no notes, then drawings and at last just words, and in the end the soloist is left alone with a bamboo flute and the composer says "goodbye" and leaves it to the soloist to finish the piece. The work is at once romantic and surrealistic and in the spirit of the times. |
