| There are two guesthouses at ARNES tourist center, one whith 20 beds, a porch and a hot-tub, the other has 18 beds. Both have a sitting room and a kitchen. |

A restaurant and a bar is at ARNES Community Hall. In addition to breakfast, lunch with typical Icelandic food is served, and varios delicious dishes can be chosen from the ambitious dinner menu. Group and corporate discount available. |

ARNES is the last stop before Ţjórsárdalur, Landmannalaugar and Sprengisandur. Gnúpverjahreppur* is the district between the rivers Ţjórsá on the east and Stóra-Laxá on the west side. The upper part of district is called Ţjórsárdalur and is the most eastern walley of ARNES County. |

This area was very prosperous in ancient times with more than 20 farmhouses, but on the year 1104 mount Hekla erupted and the land and the houses were covered with ash and consequently the district was desolated. |

However, some of the farmhouses were partly
recovered in 1939. The ruins of the least damaged of them, the farmhouse at STÖNG
is now a popular site to visit all year round.

Two festivals are being held at ARNES
every year. “The Blue Sky Festival” will be held July
5th
and 6th 2002. This is a multicultural music festial with emphasis on
folkmusic and many great artitsts are exepted to take part. |

Then it is “The Children Festival” which will be held August 2th to 5th. This is a festival where the program is specially designed for the family and the kids. |
