Snorri Sigfús Birgisson:

Music for Beginners

Piano Pieces for Beginners
25 pieces in 4 volumes.

Piano Pieces for Beginners were composed in 1984 and published by the composer in 1987
(Steinabær no. 1-4).
Distribution is through
Iceland Music Information Centre.

Many techniques are employed in these pieces which are common practice in "modern music." Sometimes colours are created playing directly on the strings of the piano and by using harmonics. Often the notation is proportionate so that the spacing of the notes conveys the rhythmic value. Experiments are made with open form and chance and in 2 pieces the student is asked to play with tape recorder and one piece is a race between teacher and student (1 piano 4 hands).

The pieces are divided between volumes as follows:

Vol. 1
Rainbow. + and -. Hiddenfolk. Ding Dong. Eenie, Meenie, Minie, Mo. Playing Dice. Mono. f p.

Vol. 2
Psalm. Composition. Lamentation. Molto Espressivo.Fire Brigade. Ensemble. Ghost Story. Cat and Mouse.

Vol. 3 - The Seasons
Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring.

Vol. 4 - Travels in Space
(1 Piano, 4 Hands)
On Earth. The Solar System. Martian. The Milky Way. Venus.

The composer together with pianist Gísli Magnússon gave the first performance of Piano Pieces for Beginners in the Nordic House in Reykjavík.
